The useful purchasing question is whether the proposed module, firmware and host software can produce an explainable, repeatable record for the functions your project actually needs.

This guide proposes an evidence package for evaluating that claim. It is a procurement and integration checklist, not a register-programming recipe or a claim that any WE product has passed a particular host qualification.

A traceable CMIS acceptance record

<desc id="we-cmis-desc">The proposed evidence workflow has four stages: identify the module and software, retain raw observations, interpret them with units and conditions, then make an acceptance decision that lists open exceptions. Name the documents and the implementation

At the October 30, 2026 source check, the OIF directory lists base CMIS 5.4, ELSFP CMIS 1.0 and the ELSFP 2.0 hardware agreement as separate publications. A purchase specification should identify the revisions relevant to the offered implementation rather than simply requesting “the latest CMIS.”

ELSFP CMIS extends the base management interface. Its resource-module model uses the Module State Machine, without the transceiver Data Path State Machine; ELSFP-specific information includes pages 1Ah and 1Bh. The agreement distinguishes advertised capabilities, controls, status and monitoring. Source: OIF-ELSFP-CMIS-01.0, Sections 6–8.

In the request for quotation, ask for a one-page implementation statement: exact part number, hardware revision, firmware identifier, applicable document revisions and known deviations. Request a dated change record for anything that could affect the host integration. A statement for another product in the same family should be treated as background until the supplier confirms its applicability.

2. Define who owns the host behavior

OIF’s informative management white paper describes a host controller coordinating external light sources and optical engines. It is an architectural recommendation, not proof that a particular module, controller or complete system is qualified. Source: OIF, Management of External Light Sources and Co-Packaged Optical Engines, Sections 2 and 9.

For procurement, turn that boundary into named responsibilities. Who supplies the host driver? Who maintains the decoder? Who decides how a reported condition is handled? Who signs off the optical-path safety procedure? Resolve these questions before accepting a demonstration that depends on an undocumented supplier-only tool.

Practical acceptance rule: require the demonstration configuration to be reproducible by the receiving team, with documented tools and permissions. Do not make shipment acceptance depend on access to an engineer’s personal laptop.

3. Ask for raw records, not only a green dashboard

The evidence package should let another engineer connect a displayed value to its origin. Keep the module serial identifier, firmware version, host software build, test conditions and timestamp with the raw observations. Store the decoding rules with the report, including units and how unavailable or invalid data is represented.

Two useful boundaries from the ELSFP CMIS agreement are that monitoring accuracy depends on the vendor and application, and reported output-power data is not valid with the output disabled. A numerical display therefore needs a validity context as well as a unit. Source: Section 8.11.

The following comparison is a proposed WE evidence checklist, not a list of OIF certification requirements.

Evidence offered

What it establishes

What to request next

“CMIS supported” on a quotation

A supplier statement of intended support

Applicable revisions, configuration and exceptions

A screenshot of decoded values

What that application displayed at that moment

Raw observations, decoder version and conditions

A timestamped log and configuration record

A traceable observation for one setup

Repeatability and agreed acceptance criteria

A repeatable demonstration on the intended host

Evidence for the tested configuration and scope

Remaining exceptions and change-control obligations

4. Separate availability from acceptance

Use two columns in the evaluation record: “available in this implementation” and “accepted for this project.” A field can exist but still be unsuitable for a requirement if its accuracy, update behavior or interpretation has not been established. Conversely, an optional field that the project does not need should not become an accidental purchasing requirement.

Consider an invented review example: a vendor demonstration shows an optical-power value, but the delivered report omits the operating state and reference measurement. Mark the evidence hold: interpretation incomplete. Do not label the hardware faulty, and do not label the function accepted. The next action is specific: obtain the missing conditions and a comparison record agreed with the supplier.

Likewise, do not replace “unavailable” with a numerical zero in a report. Those entries lead to different engineering decisions. Preserve uncertainty explicitly so procurement does not turn an incomplete spreadsheet into a performance guarantee.

5. Agree on exception handling before the trial

Ask the supplier and host team to document how they would capture and investigate a communication interruption, an unexpected status or an incomplete operation. For each proposed check, name the expected evidence, the stop condition and the person who authorizes recovery. Use only safe, supplier-approved test methods within the operating envelope.

A review can use recorded traces or an approved simulation where deliberately provoking a physical fault would be unsafe. Do not disconnect an energized optical path, defeat an interlock or alter firmware merely to manufacture a test case. Implementation details and laser safety remain subject to the equipment documentation and the responsible laboratory procedure.

Keep management acceptance separate from optical and thermal acceptance. Use the power-budget guide, interface qualification checklist and thermal validation note for those distinct work packages.

6. Put the deliverables into the purchase scope

Before ordering: obtain a versioned implementation statement and identify the host-side work that is included or excluded.

With the evaluation unit: request the agreed configuration record, tools documentation and relevant example logs.

At acceptance: retain the completed matrix, raw evidence, exceptions and the configuration to which the decision applies.

After a change: decide which affected checks must be repeated for a new module revision, firmware or host build.

The useful commercial deliverable is a bounded statement of what was tested and what remains open. Agree on the evidence before negotiating whether a generic “CMIS supported” line is sufficient.

Discuss your ELSFP evaluation requirements

Start with our ELSFP selection guide and evaluation-kit page.
