ELSFP Wavelength Acceptance: Why 1311 nm Is Not a Complete Specification

WE / Western Optronics • Optical Engineering

Before ordering an ELSFP for a CPO optical engine, what wavelength evidence should you request beyond a nominal “1311 nm” or “CWDM4” label?

Request a channel-by-channel wavelength envelope, its operating conditions, and the engine’s accepted input limits. A center-wavelength label helps identify a configuration. An acceptance decision needs the allowed range and evidence that the proposed source stays within it.

This note offers an original review method for AI data-center optical-interconnect evaluations. It does not report Western Optronics test results or qualify a particular engine and laser combination.

Wavelength acceptance requires an envelope, not only a nominal valueConceptual interval diagram. An optical-engine acceptance window surrounds an observed source wavelength envelope. A separate uncertainty allowance expands the observed envelope, leaving margin to both acceptance boundaries. No measured data or real product limits are shown. An observed envelope does not guarantee untested operation. Original schematic • no measured spectrum or product limits

Separate the form factor from the application requirement

The OIF implementation-agreement directory lists OIF-ELSFP-02.0, dated January 2025. Section 3.4 of the ELSFP agreement leaves critical laser requirements, including wavelength, to the supported optical-engine or CPO-module application specification. ELSFP form-factor conformity alone therefore does not settle the spectral acceptance question.

The practical implication is to obtain the engine’s input specification before treating two similarly named sources as substitutes. For the system context, see what an ELSFP does in a CPO system. The external source supplies continuous-wave light; engine-level modulation and the eventual data-link specification are separate parts of the qualification.

What the product label does—and does not—tell you

Published configurationWhat can be identifiedWhat to request next
CY-ELSFP-8PMF-UHP1-CWDM4-BThe current page lists two wavelength sets: 1271, 1291, 1311 and 1331 nm.Per-channel minimum and maximum wavelength, applicable conditions and the exact output assignment.
CY-ELSFP-8PMF-UHP1-1311-BThe current page lists eight channels in two banks of four, with 1311 nm as the typical wavelength. The guaranteed operating envelope for each channel, rather than assuming that every output remains exactly at the typical value.

These are different published configurations, not a promise of interchangeability. The listed wavelengths do not, by themselves, specify linewidth, side-mode behavior, drift limits or compatibility with your engine. Request the current model-specific datasheet and clarify which values are typical, guaranteed, or subject to application review.

Build a wavelength evidence sheet before comparing quotes

The following worksheet is a proposed engineering purchasing aid, not an OIF-mandated test form.

  1. Define the acceptance window. Record the optical-engine part number and specification revision, the relevant input port, allowed wavelength interval and any separate spectral requirements. Identify whether the limit concerns the peak, center, occupied spectrum or another defined metric.
  2. Identify every output. Link the module revision and serial number to physical fiber identifiers and wavelength channels. A module-level average can conceal an outlying channel.
  3. State the operating envelope. Request the conditions attached to the supplier’s limits: case temperature, power setting, supply range and any required stabilization state. Ask what startup or transition behavior falls outside steady-state guarantees.
  4. Separate evidence types. Label a datasheet guarantee, a type-characterization report and an individual unit measurement separately. A room-temperature trace on one sample cannot establish a production-wide limit over all operating conditions.
  5. Make measurement settings traceable. Record instrument model, calibration status, wavelength-band accuracy, resolution setting, input arrangement and the method used to extract the reported wavelength. Preserve the original traces when available.
  6. Agree on the decision rule. State how uncertainty and engineering reserve affect acceptance, who reviews borderline results and what changes require re-evaluation.

Yokogawa’s optical-spectrum-analyzer specifications distinguish wavelength accuracy, resolution and other measurement characteristics. A fine displayed wavelength increment or narrow resolution setting should not be substituted for the instrument’s applicable wavelength accuracy. Use the specification for the actual wavelength band and instrument version.

An illustrative margin calculation

Hypothetical values only: suppose an engine accepts a defined wavelength metric within ±3.0 nm of an agreed reference. Under the tested conditions, a source’s observed metric spans −2.0 to +2.0 nm. An agreed conservative uncertainty allowance of ±0.3 nm expands that observed interval to −2.3 to +2.3 nm. The remaining separation from each acceptance boundary is 0.7 nm.

This arithmetic tests only the stated interval and allowance. It does not establish behavior at untested temperatures, after aging, during startup, or on other units. Do not add an uncertainty allowance twice if it is already included in the reported limits. Do not apply this fictional ±3.0 nm window to either product linked above.

For an asymmetric interval, calculate the two margins separately and keep the smaller value visible. A positive margin against a center-wavelength criterion also does not establish compliance with a separate linewidth or side-mode requirement. Each criterion needs its own evidence.

Use the missing evidence to define the evaluation

If the nominal configuration is suitable but the operating envelope is undocumented, record the gap and request the missing specification or agree on a characterization plan. Do not replace the missing range with a guessed tolerance. If the engine requirement itself is unavailable, hold the compatibility conclusion open rather than marking the module as qualified.

A useful purchasing release identifies the accepted source configuration, the engine specification revision, supporting evidence and unresolved items. Keep wavelength review connected to—but distinct from—the optical power budget and thermal evaluation.

Send the acceptance window with your inquiry

Use the ELSFP selection guide to organize the requirements and the evaluation-kit page to frame the trial. When you contact Western Optronics, include the desired wavelength configuration, engine input limits, operating conditions and evidence you need. Model-specific guarantees, report availability and platform compatibility require confirmation.

Source and scope note: OIF’s directory and ELSFP agreement, Yokogawa’s instrument bulletin and the linked Western Optronics product pages were checked November 2, 2026. The worksheet, interval diagram and numerical example are original analysis. No product measurement, certification, third-party endorsement or completed system qualification is claimed.
