Define the measurement before choosing the limit

OIF-ELSFP-02.0, Section 7, assigns the equipment supplier responsibility for keeping the module case in its specified range. The module supplier defines the case measurement point, linked to a component with limited thermal margin; it need not be the hottest visible surface. Section 2.3 also addresses the module-to-heat-sink interface. These are interface requirements, not evidence that a particular module has passed a particular host test. Source: OIF ELSFP 2.0, Sections 2.3 and 7.

Before testing, request the exact part number and revision, an annotated case-probe drawing, the applicable operating limits, and the required heat sink and mounting conditions. Ask whether the limit applies continuously, during startup, or under another explicitly defined condition. Keep air-temperature limits and case-temperature limits in separate fields.

Procurement checkpoint: a quoted temperature range is incomplete without its measurement location and operating conditions. Ask for a versioned specification, not only a headline maximum.

2. Use telemetry as a second view, not a replacement probe

The ELSFP CMIS agreement requires module-temperature and supply-voltage reporting. Additional TEC-current or laser-temperature monitoring depends on the implementation’s capabilities and advertisements. Check supported fields before building the test logger. Source: OIF-ELSFP-CMIS-01.0, Section 8.2.

Record each sensor’s meaning, sampling interval and units. During startup, log output-enable state so a disabled channel is not mistaken for a valid optical-power measurement. A module-temperature register is not automatically a calibrated estimate of the designated case point or laser junction. Request the vendor’s correlation data before using one reading to infer another. Missing optional data should be recorded as unavailable, not converted into zero.

Time-align the case probe, inlet probe and module logs with optical output and electrical input measurements. If readings move in different directions, first check sensor placement, logging time offsets and operating mode before deciding that the module or host is faulty.

3. Compare configurations, not just temperature numbers

The following is a proposed engineering matrix, not an OIF qualification procedure. Select conditions within the documented module and host operating envelope. Agree on stabilization criteria, sampling rate, stop limits and recovery behavior before enabling optical output.

Condition to compare

What to preserve in the record

Cold start and warm restart

Starting temperature, controller state, time history and any transient warnings.

Steady operation at the intended output setting

Enabled channels, control mode, optical measurement plane and electrical input.

Representative neighboring modules active

Slot population, neighbor load, local inlet temperature and cooling configuration.

Minimum planned cooling within the approved envelope

Fan or coolant settings, measured local conditions and predetermined stop limits.

Repeat after a normal service cycle

Heat-sink contact condition, mounting method and repeatability of the case reading.

Hold the hardware configuration constant when comparing module samples. Hold the module and output settings constant when comparing cooling solutions. Otherwise a lower temperature may simply reflect a lighter operating load. A bench result with an open cover should not be carried into a closed chassis without a new check.

Plan optical containment and the applicable laser-safety procedure before the trial. Do not defeat interlocks or exceed operating limits to obtain a failure point.

4. Put uncertainty into the acceptance decision

Consider a deliberately invented screening example. Assume a supplier-designated case limit of 70°C, a measured case temperature of 62°C, and a conservative 3°C allowance for measurement and setup uncertainty. These values are not WE product specifications or measured results.

Conservative headroom = 70 − (62 + 3) = 5°C

If the project separately requires an 8°C design guard band, the example has a 3°C shortfall against that project criterion. The appropriate decision is to hold release and investigate cooling or the operating envelope. This is not, by itself, a claim of OIF noncompliance.

Hypothetical thermal headroom comparison
<desc id="we-margin-desc">Calculated conservative headroom is five degrees Celsius. This arithmetic screen does not model laser-junction temperature, transient behavior or lifetime.

In a real evaluation, justify the allowance from the instrumentation, probe attachment, calibration and repeatability evidence. Define whether the design guard band already includes uncertainty so the same allowance is not counted twice. Do not turn this illustrative subtraction into a substitute for the supplier’s thermal model.

5. Link the thermal result to optical acceptance

Temperature alone does not complete the trial. At each planned condition, compare every required optical channel with its agreed limits at the defined reference plane. Preserve the power setting, control mode and relevant alarm history alongside the thermal record. A stable reported temperature with an unexplained optical change still needs investigation.

For the separate optical calculation, use our laser-to-engine power-budget guide. For channel identity and harness evidence, use the fiber-mapping and polarization checklist. Keeping these records linked makes a failed condition easier to reproduce without mixing optical loss, cooling and mapping problems.

6. What buyers should request with the evaluation unit

A thermal boundary-condition sheet: case measurement point, operating limits, cooling assumptions and any mode-dependent restrictions.

A configuration record: module and firmware revisions, heat-sink and cage revisions, enabled channels and settings.

An evidence package: identified instruments, timestamps, raw measurements, uncertainty basis and disclosed test conditions.

An exception list: unavailable telemetry, untested conditions and deviations requiring agreement before a larger trial.

Ask which evidence applies to the exact unit or production revision being offered. A proposed test plan, a typical curve and a completed acceptance record answer different questions. Record unresolved items in the purchase or evaluation scope rather than silently treating them as verified capabilities.

Plan a defined ELSFP trial

Start with the ELSFP selection guide and evaluation-kit page.
