ELSFP supplies continuous-wave light to optical engines; that light-delivery path is different from the engine’s modulated data output. For a refresher, see what an ELSFP does in a CPO system.

The ELSFP agreement assigns several optical requirements, including tolerance to back-reflection, to the relevant optical-engine/CPO application specification (§3.4). Its defined test point TPL2 uses a characterized test-grade patch cord (§3.6.1). A supplier’s module-output figure and your engine-input result therefore need a documented relationship; do not assume they describe the same boundary.

Keep three acceptance questions separate

Evidence

What it answers

What it does not prove

End-face image and inspection result

What contamination or defects were observed under the stated inspection method.

Forward transmission, return loss, or system compatibility.

Insertion loss

How much forward optical power is lost across the defined path and fixtures.

How much reflected light reaches the source.

Return loss / reflected-power result

How much power returns toward the measurement reference plane.

That every channel supplies adequate power to its engine.

IEC 61300-3-35:2022 addresses visual examination of fiber-optic connector end faces. Its public scope explicitly separates visual inspection from attenuation and return-loss qualification. After the prescribed inspection and cleaning process, an inspection failure alone is not sufficient to reject a connector when specified optical performance is met. This does not justify leaving loose contamination in place. Apply the correct procedure and the agreed acceptance specification, rather than treating a microscope screenshot as the whole decision.

Fluke Networks’ inspection guidance recommends inspection before connection and reinspection after necessary cleaning, including equipment ports. A protective cap does not establish cleanliness. For an ELSFP blind-mate interface, obtain the connector manufacturer’s approved access, inspection and cleaning procedure rather than improvising with a generic probe.

ELSFP permits physical-contact and air-gap interface designs. Confirm which is supplied before applying a contact-ferrule inspection rule or cleaning method.

IEC 61300-3-6 defines return loss using incident power divided by reflected power, in decibels. With this positive return-loss convention, a larger number means less returned power. A negative-dB reflectance figure uses a different sign convention; label the metric before comparing limits.

Make two supplier reports comparable

The following is a proposed procurement worksheet, not a standard-mandated form. Ask both suppliers to fill it out before comparing their pass/fail summaries.

Identify the exact assembly. Record module and cable part numbers, revisions, serial numbers, connector geometry and channel map. A result for a different harness is supporting background, not acceptance of the delivered one.

Draw the measurement boundaries. Show the launch reference plane, receive plane, included mating interfaces, adapters and any fan-out. State which fixture contributions are included or removed and how that correction was established.

State conditions. Record wavelength, channel, source operating condition, temperature and relevant polarization state. Preserve the test setup identifier so a retest can use the same conditions.

Keep transmission and reflection results distinct. Request insertion loss and return loss as separate fields with units and sign convention. Identify whether the return measurement represents one interface or the complete tested assembly.

Record instrument limits. Include instrument model, calibration status, power range, reference method and uncertainty. A marginal result deserves review against uncertainty, not extra displayed decimal places.

Attach the decision rule. Cite the agreed application requirement, revision, limit and treatment of uncertainty. Leave a criterion unresolved if the engine supplier has not provided it; do not fill the gap with an unrelated connector datasheet.

A small example: equal loss, different evidence

Illustrative scenario only. Two harness reports each show 0.8 dB insertion loss. Report A includes the launch adapter and two mated interfaces; Report B excludes the launch adapter and includes one interface. The numbers are not a like-for-like comparison. Neither number reveals the return loss. No pass threshold or product performance is implied by this example.

A useful response is to request the missing setup drawings and raw channel results, then agree on a common boundary or an explicitly documented correction. Do not average dissimilar paths to create a reassuring fleet-level number. In a multi-fiber assembly, retain results by channel so one weak path is not hidden by the mean.

This acceptance evidence complements the engine-input power budget and fiber-mapping and polarization checks; it does not replace them.

Define the hold point before energizing the system

Appendix B of OIF-ELSFP-02.0 discusses contamination and link-loss verification before full-power operation. Inspection and cleaning alone do not assure a contamination-free connection. Use the actual system safety procedure and approved instrumentation; this article is not a live-laser handling procedure.

For a purchasing specification, name the person or team authorized to release the assembly for system evaluation. Require traceable records, a documented disposition for inconsistent results, and a repeat-test rule after a connector, fixture or harness changes. These are proposed controls to keep an acceptance decision reproducible, not a claim of certification.

Build the evidence request around your CPO platform

Use the ELSFP selection guide to organize the application requirements and the evaluation-kit page to frame the intended trial.
